The Four Faculties of Happiness

The idea that our happiness is in direct proportion to us living up to our chief faculties, or that which distinguishes us from other species, is a profound and revolutionary idea.

One of the first to come upon this principle and eloquently reason it out, was Aristotle. In his book of ethics, he wrote that all things have a purpose or an ultimate end - that is, whether in expressing art or scientific pursuits or whatever action we take, we are always striving to arrive at some 'good'. Our choices are not random. They reflect our underlying beliefs of what behaviors (means) can get us to a desired good (desired end).

If you take any of your behaviors and ask yourself, 'why do I do that?', 'why that?', 'why that?' - and continue to brake it down to its root cause, you'll soon find that you reach an end point. This is always breaks down, in some form of statement, 'because it makes me feel happy'. This is equally applicable whether a choice is to smoke or to exercise. The means may differ, but that which we aim at is the same.

The good we are all in pursuit of, is happiness. This is the most inclusive end of our actions, and as expressed by Aristotle, it's actually more than just a pleasurable state of mind - but in its highest sense, one of holistic well being or the flourishing of our humanity.

As such, if holistic happiness is our ultimate pursuit, as human beings we can only reach this state, when we express what makes us uniquely human. For example, if the eye's purpose is to see, then its 'happiness' is in its expression of sight. If an eagle is designed for powerful flight, it's happiness is in soaring to great heights (not in being caged).

The Good of man is the active exercise of his soul’s faculties in conformity with excellence or virtue, or if there be several human excellences or virtues, in conformity with the best and most perfect among them.
Aristotle

In the same vain, Abraham Maslow observed that it is indeed true when it comes to his observations on what creates peak psychological health. His most famous quote expresses the same idea - i.e. "a musician must make music, an artist must paint, a poet must write, if he is to be ultimately at peace with himself. This need we call self-actualization."

The essence of self-actualization, is then in the expression of what is our inherent potential as human beings. We will only find our happiness or complete fulfillment in our life, when we live up to the unique faculties which are inherent within our creation.

So what are they?

Many answers have been given by philosophers and authors throughout the ages, but perhaps none are more revelatory than the set discovered by Dr. Stephen Covey. He came to this breakthrough realization when reviewing in-depth 200 years of success literature published in the USA and the keys to successful living.

In his research he made the connection, that out of all the living-beings on this planet - we are the only beings that can become enabled to freely make choices, irrespective of environment and past conditioning. And we are able to do this, because of four faculties:

> Imagination <
> Free Will <
> Self awareness <

> Rational Conscience <

These are the capacities that establish human consciousness, as something totally different from any other animal. It is these four faculties that empower a human being to move beyond conditioned reflexes, beyond learned limitations and beyond problems. It is our ability to change that is the key human characteristic, and as such, it's in this expression of human potential that we realize complete happiness.

These four faculties, are the elements responsible for every advancement, every creative act, and every miracle:

i.e. where we facilitate 'breakthrough realizations'...
where we create new forms, ideas and thoughts...
where we set in motion THE LAW OF ATTRACTION...

In the first module of 'a course in Greatness' we'll integrate these four faculties, in one complete self-empowerment system.
