"An Authentically Happy, Fulfilled and Fundamentally Free Life - only comes when we are Becoming
the very best people we're capable of Being."

This is another self-evident, but often forgotten truth...

In the process of continual growth, continual development of self -- in each day becoming a better and better human being -- we find happiness.

Whether we are service providers or administrators, teachers or doctors, entertainers or artists, engineers or IT specialists, or whatever vocational choice we make with our lives -- happiness comes as the effect of living our lives closer and closer to our potential, on all dimensions, on a continual basis.

  • In using the full capabilities of our physical, emotional, social, mental and spiritual self,
  • In fulfilling the function and purpose of our whole Being,
  • In expanding the highest qualities/ potentials of who we are as humans,

we realize the state of happiness.

The pursuit of happiness, is therefore one with the pursuit of self-actualization. We need but look within our experience, at our moments of greatest joy, and trace out this essential cause and effect relationship.

In the movement of becoming the very best of who we are, in expressing excellence, in living out the highest good - all else is then added:

greater self-esteem, greater self-confidence, greater enjoyment with everything we interact with... to all the external goods that come as the effect, of being a cause of greater value in our world.

This is a timeless idea of happiness -- an integrated understanding of who we are and what is our real purpose.

Expressed in different ways, it's the essential teachings of all the Greats: from the ancients of Buddha to Jesus, from Plato to Confucius, from Aristotle to Marcus Aurelius, to the greats of our age -- from Einstein to Gandhi, from Martin Luther King to Eleanor Roosevelt, from Dalai Lama to Mother Teresa.

Yes, this is the path less traveled,
but it is the one that makes all the difference.

For conversely, unhappiness is the result of wasted potential, of repeating the same day over and over again, of living a life of quiet desperation. It's the effect of staying within the same zones of comfort, within the same capabilities, within the same mediocre habits of action and thought.

"You must want to be a first class - meaning the very best you are capable of becoming. If you plan to be less than you are capable of being, then I warn you that you’ll be deeply unhappy for the rest of your life."
